A kundli (also called a Janam Kundli or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Vedic astrology uses it to describe your temperament, strengths and the timing of important phases in life.
The three things you need
To calculate a kundli you need your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The time matters most: the rising sign (lagna) changes roughly every two hours, and the Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day.
Lagna — your rising sign
The lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It becomes the first house of your chart and represents your body, personality and overall approach to life. Everything else in the chart is counted from here.
Rashi — your Moon sign
In Vedic astrology your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth. Because the Moon governs the mind and emotions, Indian horoscopes (rashifal) and most compatibility checks are based on the Moon sign rather than the Sun sign.
Nakshatra — the finer detail
The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20' each. Your birth nakshatra describes your nature in more detail, determines your Vimshottari dasha sequence and is central to Guna Milan in marriage matching.
The twelve houses
The chart is split into twelve houses (bhavas), each ruling an area of life — the 1st is self, the 2nd wealth and family, the 7th marriage and partnerships, the 10th career, and so on. A planet's house shows where in life its energy is expressed.
Dashas — the timing of life
The Vimshottari dasha system divides a 120-year cycle into planetary periods (mahadashas) and sub-periods (antardashas). The period running now colours the themes you experience, which is why astrologers always look at your current dasha alongside the chart itself.
North or South Indian chart?
Both show the same information. The North Indian chart is diamond-shaped with fixed houses; the South Indian chart is square with fixed signs. Our free kundli lets you switch between them.
