Guna Milan (Ashtakoot matching) is the traditional North Indian method of checking marriage compatibility. It compares the Moon signs and nakshatras of the two partners across eight factors (kootas), for a total of 36 points.
The eight kootas
| Koota | Points | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Work nature and ego |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Destiny and wellbeing |
| Yoni | 4 | Intimacy and physical compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa) |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Family welfare and finances |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny |
Reading the score
- Below 18 — traditionally not recommended without remedies.
- 18–24 — average; acceptable for many families.
- 25–32 — a good match.
- Above 32 — an excellent match.
Doshas to look out for
Nadi dosha (both partners share the same Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha (Moon signs in a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship) carry the most weight. Classical texts describe several cancellations, so a dosha in the table doesn't automatically rule out a match.
Beyond the number
Guna Milan only uses the Moon. A complete match also considers the whole chart — Manglik status, the 7th house, running dashas and both partners' overall strengths. Treat the score as a starting point, not a verdict.
