Sade Sati is one of the most talked-about periods in Vedic astrology. It lasts about seven and a half years and happens when Saturn transits the twelfth, first and second signs from your natal Moon.

Why seven and a half years?

Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. Passing through three consecutive signs therefore takes about seven and a half years — sade sati literally means "seven and a half".

The three phases

  1. First phase (12th from the Moon) — expenses, travel, disturbed sleep and a sense of letting go.
  2. Second phase (over the Moon) — the peak: responsibility, emotional pressure and important life lessons.
  3. Third phase (2nd from the Moon) — attention shifts to finances, family and speech, and things gradually stabilise.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Saturn is the planet of discipline, patience and karma. Many people achieve lasting success during Sade Sati because it rewards hard work and honesty. Results depend on Saturn's strength in your chart, your running dasha and the sign involved.

Practical guidance

  • Keep a steady routine and avoid shortcuts.
  • Be careful with major financial risks and loans.
  • Look after your health, especially sleep and joints.
  • Serve elders and those in need — traditionally Saturn's most recommended remedy.
  • Chant Saturn's mantra or the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays if it brings you peace of mind.
